Re: Request for Presentations

Dear Colleague:

For the past nine years, the New York Association of Drug Treatment Court Professionals has held an annual conference that brings together drug court professionals from across the state. These conferences have provided an opportunity for drug court practitioners to learn new practices in the field and a chance to network with their friends and colleagues who share a commitment to enhancing drug court programs throughout New York. Over 700 individuals attended the conference in Buffalo in March 2007.

The New York Association of Drug Treatment Court Professionals is in the process of planning its Tenth Anniversary Conference to be held March 5 – March 7, 2008 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Buffalo, New York. The format for the conference will include a pre-conference workshop on March 5, 2008, followed by one and a half training days with breakout sessions lasting 75 minutes each. These breakout sessions will occur throughout the day on March 6th and only in the morning on March 7th. The Planning Committee is seeking proposals for these breakout sessions.

The theme for next year’s conference is “Celebrating a Decade of Partnership: Reaffirming our Commitment”. Breakout sessions can be either single presenters or up to three person panels with a moderator. Your proposals should specify whether your topic relates to adult, family or juvenile drug courts.  If you are interested in participating, you will need to complete the enclosed application, keeping in mind that your topic should be relevant to the general theme. The Association will waive the registration fees of those who are selected to present.

We look forward to receiving your proposals for the breakout sessions and are confident that this process will produce a program rich in content, expertise and experience. Thank you in advance for your effort.

Sincerely,

Hon. John Rowley, President, New York Association of Drug Treatment Court Professionals

Presentation Theme

The 10 year anniversary theme of the New York Association of Drug Treatment Court Professionals Conference is “Celebrating a Decade of Partnership: Reaffirming Our Commitment”. The New York Association of Drug Treatment Court Professionals is seeking presentations that focus on evidence based practices and topics related to the theme of partnership. The theme refers to strengthening existing partnerships, but also focuses on working to build new partnerships to serve the diverse and unique needs of the drug court population. Experts suggest that treatment of any one problem in isolation is futile.  Drug Court Key Component Ten, described in the publication Defining Drug Courts: The Key Components, indicates that forging partnerships among drug courts, public agencies, and community-based organizations generates local support and enhances drug court program effectiveness.

Because many clients lack a basic foundation for community reintegration, identifying service needs in the early stages of participation helps to treat the person, not just the disease. Service needs include not only evidence based practices of substance abuse and cognitive behavioral treatment, but also supportive services such as housing assistance, educational and vocational training and skills development, physical health and testing services, prenatal services, entitlement counseling, debt counseling, financial health, family and domestic violence counseling, child care and parenting, recreational and expressive therapies, mentoring and many other necessary social services. Drug courts must nurture established linkages as well as new linkages by building relationships with partners and the community to continue to meet client’s needs and endure crisis.  Mutually beneficial relationships are part of the essential collaboration between a drug court and the community it serves.

The New York Association of Drug Treatment Court Professionals is hoping you will take into consideration this year’s theme when submitting your request. We look forward to hearing from you!
